Deputy Ranking Member on Health on the Parliamentary Select Committee, Dr Mark Kurt Nawaani says President Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111 hospitals initiative is dead upon arrival as the best his government can achieve is to lay blocks.

This government can’t even build these hospitals to the roofing level as the allocated money for each hospital is inadequate, he said, adding that he owns and manages a hospital hence knows what goes on in it.

According to him, the US100 million can only help in laying blocks and not what the government has claimed.

Dr Nawaani is a Member of Parliament for Nabdam Constituency and commented on Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio.

Following the novel coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, President Akufo-Addo took notice of the stringency of the pandemic’s impact on many districts in Ghana without hospitals.

The situation however born the agenda 111 hospitals initiative where each district in the country without a district hospital according to the President will be blessed with one in 12 months after securing US100 million.

In the Upper East Region, 7 districts will be benefiting from the initiative.

But Dr Nawaani differs his views from the initiative, saying that it is another “counterfeit” promise that the President is trying to blindfold Ghanaians with as he owns a hospital and knows what goes on in it.

He said “I must say that the best government can do is block arrangements. I believe that the money involves in each hospital cannot go anywhere it’s too small an amount of money for what we can call a hospital. Remember that a hospital with doctors quarters that can’t support. I don’t just speak, but I speak based on experience and I know that such money is inadequate.”

Meanwhile, the Project Implementation Committee chaired by Chief of Staff, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, had secured sites and land titles for 88 out of the 101 district hospitals and each unit would cost US$17 million, covering 15 acres and each hospital is expected to be completed within 12 months, starting from the point of commencement.
