Former Member of Parliament for the Chiana-Paga constituency in the Upper East Region, Abuga Pele has thanked President Akufo-Addo for releasing him from jail.
The former National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) was sentenced to 6 years jail term alongside a businessman, Philip Assibit who was also sentenced to 12 years in jail on February 23, 2018, for their involvement in a GHc4.1 million GYEEDA scandal.
But Mr. Pele was granted a presidential pardon on July 1, 2021, on health grounds after serving 3 years in the Nsawam Prisons.
On Saturday, August 21, the people of Chiana-Paga, friends and family members of Mr. Pele as well as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) poured out on the streets to welcome the former MP who left home for years.
Amidst drumming and dancing, the jubilant constituents who were dressed in white attire to indicate their joyful mood, escorted the former GYEEDA boss from Navrongo, the meeting point to Nakolo, his hometown.
Mr. Pele who was ushered home in a ‘grand style’, thanked the constituents for their unflinching support to him when he became an MP for the area. According to him, the support he had from his constituents even at a time the NDC went into opposition from the year 2000-2004 “tells a lot about the love of the people for the NDC”.
Mr. Pele who made a public statement for the first time after his release from prison thanked President Akufo-Addo for granting him amnesty.
“Thank God for my release, I thank the president, I thank the people of Nakolo and all those who were instrumental in getting me out of prison.”
