Deputy Communication Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, Johnson Ayine, has expressed worry for the Bongo District Assembly, Maltaaba Community Bank and the NPP, over an investigative report of alleged acts of corruption in the award of boreholes contract at the Bongo District Assembly.

According to the investigative piece by Manasseh Azure Awuni of The Fourth Estate, the Bongo District Assembly allegedly awarded a contract to itself and Diana Aburiya, using the certificates of a company belonging to Asumbekere Karim Anagbila without his permission; among other allegations of illegal transactions allowed by the Maltaaba Community Bank in Bongo.

But speaking on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio, NPP’s Johnson Ayine said “My worry is about the district; my worry is about the bank. My worry is about the party in Bongo and the region as a whole.”

He explained that “This is a region that the {NPP} party did not perform well in the last elections. Even though, in the presidential elections, we appreciated our votes in nominal terms compared to 2016. But in terms of parliamentary, we loss all the 3 seats we were occupying and won one new seat. So, Upper East as we speak, we don’t have a good name in the party. Looking at the performance in Bongo in the last elections, we should have been able to see how we can consolidate and improve upon it come 2024. But unfortunately, look at what we’re discussing here.”

Mr. Ayine who described the circumstances surrounding the alleged scandal as betrayal of trust, observed that “if you look at all of them {the actors in the investigative report}, apart from the engineer, the finance officer, the coordinating director and also the bank, all those that have generated this thing are NPP members. That is why I describe it as purely a betrayal of trust. It was like there was some trust between them and along the process they betrayed each other which is rather unfortunate.”

Going forward, he advised the characters involved in the alleged scandal, NPP supporters in the Bongo District and in the Upper East Region, to have a change of attitude; learn to forgive one another and learn to allow sleeping dogs lie.
