Following the military take-over of power in the Republic of Guinea, a Security Analyst, Ibard Ibrahim, has called on leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take a second look at its role in the governance of member states towards ending military takeovers of governments.
Commenting on Sunday’s coup in Guinea on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio, Mr. Ibrahim said what happened in Guinea was expected.
“When you look at the pattern we have seen in recent years, there are presidents within the sub region who do their due two terms but because they want to perpetuate their governance, they try to sneak in a constitutional amendment so they can run for a third time. And so far, it’s been disappointing ECOWAS has not been able to tackle that issue. Because of the ECOWAS charter which talks about the principle of non interference in the internal affairs of member states.” He said.
Mr. Ibrahim continued that “Why should ECOWAS leaders have their hands tied to their backs? Individual presidents can take whatever decisions they want saying it is their internal affair; don’t interfere. But when things hit a snag, then you have to fall on ECOWAS to resolve the issue. I think this protocol has to be reviewed.”
Meanwhile, ECOWAS, African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN) Secretary-general, and some Western countries have condemned the coup and asked for immediate restoration to democratic rule.
