The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has charged a newly inaugurated 10-member Health Committee for the Upper East Region to work towards resolving land issues the regional hospital was facing.

Mr. Yakubu observed that the hospital, which serves as the major referral centre for the region, was challenged by agitations of family members and community leaders of the catchment area for payment of compensations which had prevented the fencing of the facility over the years.

He said works on the final phase of the regional hospital was progressing steadily; thus the need for the committee to immediately work to resolve the compensation issues upon assumption of office.

Mr. Yakubu further charged the committee to see its task as a call to national duty; particularly as it assumed office at a time Ghana’s health care system was deeply challenged.

“The COVID-19 pandemic still lingers, having disrupted our health systems and infrastructure, and drained resources.” He stated.

He also urged members of the committee to apprise themselves with government’s policies on health in the country, which included the ‘Agenda 111,’ free maternal health care, the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) concept among others. Because according to him, “It is that knowledge which will put members in the right stead to assist the Regional Director of Health Services to implement policies and programmes to improve the health of our people.”

Members of the Committee included; Agnes Mariam Anyinatuo Gumah, Chairperson, Dr. Emmanuel Kofi Dzotsi, Edmund Nellic Nyanwura, Reverend James Awuni and Alhaji Abudulai Abdul Mumumi.

The rest are; Michael Salifu Awini, Pe Joseph Banaoeh Afagachie II, Vida Anaab, Edmund Bombande and Dr Aiden Suntaa Saanwie.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Madam Gumah, thanked the Regional Minister for the opportunity to serve on the committee for a three-year period.

She assured that they would play their advisory role to help improve the health delivery system in the region.
