A retired Police officer, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has admonished the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to devise other means to mediate the political instability in Guinea rather than giving authorities ultimatum to organize elections.

ECOWAS leaders at an Extraordinary Summit held yesterday in Accra unanimously took a decision to have authorities in Guinea organize elections within 6 months in order to return the country to constitutional rule.

But reacting to the issue, the retired police officer who is now a Member of Parliament (MP) for for Wa West Constituency said he finds the decision by ECOWAS laughable as according to him, it was hastily made.

Mr. Toobu doubts if anything good will come out of the directive.

“I heard that they have given Guinea six months ultimatum to hold an election; and I was just laughing. You know why I was laughing? Ask Madam Jean Mensah when was she appointed Electoral Commissioner of Ghana? She had over two years to organize election 2020; {yet} you saw the mess we went through. And you are telling Mamady to do it in six months- Come back to your own country Ghana; the electoral commissioner had more than two years to conduct 2020 elections and it ended in a mess; it was embarrassing. And you are telling a soldier who has taken over a country to do it in six months.”

“I want to advise ECOWAS leaders; beyond the ultimatum, behind the scenes, deal with Mamady and strengthen the system so that they will be able to return the country to constitutional rule. But as for the ultimatum, the time is practically too short.” He said on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East programme.
