The Principal of Golden Step Schools in Bolgatanga, Robert Atiah, wants the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and successive governments to take full responsibility for the incessant leakage of examination questions that normally ends in the serial cancellation of students’ results.
WAEC has rescheduled this year’s physics and business management examinations among others in the ongoing West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over reports that the exam questions got leaked.
But reacting to the development which keeps recurring every time students are writing exams, Mr. Atiah blamed WAEC authorities and policy makers for the blunder.
He, therefore called for a second look at the educational system in the country and particularly, the operations of WAEC in order to regain the full confidence of the public.
Mr. Atiah who doubles as the Upper East Regional Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), also believes that “Alternative examining bodies might come to curb this problem better for us.”
“We have put in many proposals to GES (Ghana Education Service) in our meetings and other platforms asking that there must be other examining bodies to break down the monopoly of WAEC; WAEC is making it too hard for people. So if things are hard for you and you cannot breakthrough, you crack it. And that is the cracking students are doing.”
According to him, students don’t like study these days; explaining tha if you ask students to choose between paying part-time teachers to come and teach them or buy examination questions from WAEC, they will choose the latter.
