A communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, Abdallah Jonathan Salifu, has attributed Government’s delay in naming nominees for the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to lack of funds.

“Even though, some of us were aware that internal issues made the president to delay in announcing his nominees, it wasn’t internal issues alone. There is no money. So the issue of no funds was another factor. It was a clever way of delaying to mobilize money for the District Assemblies’ common fund. Largely, the delay had to do with funds. Government needed space to mobilize money.”

“After the approval of the MMDCEs, they {Assemblies} may receive funds for the last quarter for last year within a shorter space and you will have the first quarter of this year following up soon.” He spoke on Daybreak Upper East on A1 Radio Monday.

Before the release of the list, there had been concerns from a section of the public over how long it was taking the government to name MMDCE nominees; almost 9 months after re-assuming power.

The nomination of MMDCEs started with the setting up of committees at the regional levels to vet persons who expressed interest in the positions.

Four persons each were shortlisted from the various MMDAs and forwarded to the national level where the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Dan Botwe chaired the second vetting process.

The Dan Botwe- led committee submitted its report to the President who made the final determination and returned same to the Local Government Minister; and the official release of the list of nominees was done on Sunday September 19, 2021.
