The Upper East Regional Director of Education, Edward Azure, has expressed worry over the poor performance of public schools in the region during West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

He said public schools in the Upper East Region are among the worse in the country when it comes to performance in examinations.

Mr. Azure made this known in an interview on Daybreak Upper East programme on A1 Radio.

“Students’ performance in exams across the region is not so good. We have realized that our performance in WASSCE and BECE is among the poorest in the country.”

According to him, “In term of ranking, the 5 Northern Regions are always competing for the last positions.”

He explained that “So many factors contribute to this. We know it comes from the students, it comes from parents, it comes from teachers and it also comes from the communities in general and sometimes even from our Management level.”

Though, Mr. Azure admitted the need for more monitoring and supervision on the part of Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES), he observed that “Most students across the region when there are registered for WASSCE and BECE, they don’t come to school anymore. Some go to the galamsey sites; some go down south to do odd jobs- waiting for the time for exams to come and write.”

He thus urged parents to help monitor their children’s education.

He also called for students to be encouraged to stay [in school] after they have been registered to write their exam.

On the part of GES management in the region, Mr. Azure said strategic monitoring systems were being put in place to help improve the quality of education and performance in schools.

He added that his outfit was planning “A stakeholder engagement with Retired Directors of Education. It is scheduled for the 1st week of October [2021], if things go according to plan. We are going to engage all the stakeholders so that all of us will commit ourselves to working towards improving education in our region.
