The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has appealed to Government to as a matter of urgency intensify public education on the processes of accessing information under the Right To Information (RTI) law.

According to the foundation, intensifying public education on the law will help clear some of  the misconceptions that are associated with it.

Adizatu Moro Maiga, a Programmes Officer in the Media, Good Governance and Democracy Programme at MFWA, made this appeal on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East show in line with the commemoration of ‘The Universal Access To Information Day’.

Ms. Adizatu Moro Maiga

“We still think that information is on the low, public knowledge is on the low. So we are really asking for intensive and extensive education, public awareness. Government really needs to put in a lot of education to empower and educate and sensitize the public about The Right to Information as well as the public institutions that are holding on to information. One of the findings was that a lot of them [public] are oblivious of the law. So we still think that education is very important”. Ms. Imoro stated.

She continued that “What people don’t know is that the law does not ask that when you are requesting information you should pay for the information you are requesting for. No; the law mandates that of course when you go to any public institution and you are asking for information, however means you want the information to be given to you is what you have to pay for. So, if you are asking that the public institution prints for you then you pay for the printing and if it’s photocopy, you pay for the photocopy. But it’s not for you to pay for the information that you are asking for.”

Ms. Moro went on to call on Parliament to pass a legal instrument that will lay bare some of the grave areas within the law.
