Journalists in Ghana have been encouraged to prioritise data-driven reporting as a means to enhance credibility, accountability, and the overall impact of their work.
Nii Nookwei Tackie, a data analyst and lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism under the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC-IJ), made the appeal while addressing participants at a training session on data journalism and spreadsheet analysis at Central Hotel in Accra.
Mr. Tackie emphasized the importance of producing factual, evidence-based stories backed by reliable data. “Certain stories were made possible by journalists who could read and analyse data,” he said, noting that reporters who consistently rely on verified numbers and thorough research are more likely to be trusted by audiences and to stand out in public discourse.
He cautioned against overly emotional reporting, explaining that some issues appear more alarming than they truly are when not examined through data. “If you decide to be different and stick to what the numbers are saying—what actual data is saying—you present it clearly, and people begin to recognize you as someone who understands the conversation. It becomes easier for audiences to digest whatever you are saying,” he said.
Mr. Tackie also highlighted the need for journalists to clearly indicate the sources of their data. He observed that many stories fail to reference where information is obtained, which weakens credibility. “Stories that actually show where the source of the data comes from are rarely mentioned in our context. This is significant if you want to build credibility. You want people to wake up in the morning and trust that you are accurately reporting data,” he said.
He added that properly analysed and presented data empowers citizens to make informed decisions on national issues. Tackie urged media practitioners to consistently support their reports with credible data to enhance accuracy, professionalism, and public confidence in journalism.
