UWR: Police foil robbery attempt; 3 suspects escape leaving ammunition, other items

The Upper West Regional Police Command says it has foiled robbery attempts on the commuters of the Wa-Wechau Road. The Command said it gathered intelligence that some men were hidden in a bush between Varempere and Viere in the Wa West District waiting to ambush commuters and rob them of their possessions.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Officer of the Upper West Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Gideon Ohene-Boateng and copied to the media.

The statement said “On 1st October, 2021 at about 1100hrs, [the Police] gathered that three armed men were hiding in a bush at Varempere, a village near Wechau in Wa West District preparing to rob commuters on the Wa-Wechiau road.”

Acting on the intelligence gathered, the Regional Commander, ACP Peter Ndekugri dispatched men from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) to go to the scene and verify the information gathered.

According to statement, while the men from the SWAT unit approached the scene, the suspected robbers began to fire at them.

“The armed men opened gun shots on the police and the police returned the gun shots. The three armed men who were also firing an AK 47 rifle managed to escape. They left behind Thirty-nine (39) Live AK 47 ammunition, one single barrel short gun with four live AA cartridges, two APSONIC motorbikes with registration numbers M-21-NR 5052 and M-21-NR 9505 with their ignition keys, one Techno Pop 4 cell phone, one Techno spark 5 cell phone, a dagger, a backpack.” The statement said.

The Police Command sought the assistance of the public saying, “The suspects are believed to have sustained gunshot wounds and may be seeking for medical treatment in any of the health facilities in the region. Messages have been relayed to all surrounding villages, including assembly members, all medical facilities and herbal centers to be on the lookout and inform police of anyone who reports there with fresh injuries, especially gun shot injuries. The local radio stations have also been informed to relay the message to their listeners.”
