A gender advocate and former Ghanaian Ambassador to Italy, Tangoba Abayage has observed that women from rural areas’ roles are empirical in terms of rural development and growth of the country’s micro-economy.

Madam Abayage speaking on ‘Reporter’s Visit’ show on A1 Radio noted that rural women are usually overlooked when it comes to key contributions in their families but, in reality, the family’s financial burdens are put on the rural women making them engage in petty trade to support their families.

According to her, “90 percent of women are engaged in the non-formal or informal economy, they are basically farmers, they are small scale industry people, market women: contributing their quota in development even when they are not in the industry, their homes, their contributions to the families cannot be quantified, highly valuable to the small economies of their families, the communities and the whole country”.

Madam Tangoba’s comments came on the back of this year’s celebration of International Day of Rural Women, which seeks to celebrate and honor women and girls living in rural areas in the world.

According to her, even though rural women are contributing a lot in terms of financial support to their families and communities, the is the need to put in pragmatic measures to support women in rural communities in terms of loans and other support systems.

“Our normal banks, the interest rates they put on their loans are too out of place: the first place accessing these loans from the bank is very difficult for women because they will ask you for some form of collateral or some form of guarantee before they will give you the loan and going through such a hassle and unfortunately the women don’t even have the time” She stated

She added that “The best thing we can do is to find a way of getting more money for these rural women, they don’t need much”.
