Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary School (CHASS) believes the prohibition of corporal punishment in schools has emboldened students to misbehave towards teachers and school rules.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has banned any form of corporal punishment in primary and secondary schools across Ghana. According to GES, teachers are expected to use alternative sanctions as measures for correcting students in schools.

But addressing it 59th annual conference at Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital on the theme, “Discipline in our schools and Child right, the fate of the school Head” the National Chairman of CHASS Alhaji Yakub A.B Abubakar said the abandonment of corporal punishment in secondary schools has encouraged students to misbehave.

According to Mr. Abubakar, breaking of school rules by students are among others are very common across the country because students are now involved in the use of hard drugs that lead them to engage themselves in indiscipline.

He said “though CHASS is not against the policy that prohibits corporal punishment, we also feel that this prohibition has emboldened the students to misbehave. Mr. Chairman, the level of student indiscipline in our school is growing by the day and it is pervasive.

From breaking common school rules, students are now involved in the use of hard drugs, pushing down school fence walls and engaged in physical fights with implements like knives, and cutlasses; inflicting serious cuts on themselves”

“Vandalizing teachers properties like cars and farms are common occurrences when teachers try to instil discipline. In some instances, they engaged in the destruction and burning of school properties like dormitories, furniture and other buildings” he added

Mr. Abubakar stated that CHASS has observed with wonder how some child right organisations quickly jump into defending children. He said this calls for stakeholder consultation in order to deal with indiscipline in the educational systems.
