To help address the growing concerns about poor waste management in the Upper West Region, students in parts of the region are being trained to turn plastic waste into art. The goal of the project is to help students realize the economic potential of waste products.

The Assembly Member for the Nayiri/Fifamuni Electoral Area, Minkailu Yakubu Hamidu explained that when children are sensitized to the negative effects plastics have on the environment, they are placed in a better position to exercise caution when dealing with plastics.

“I want us to know how best collectively, we can use creative arts to change plastic waste. I want to have a waste to art exhibition, where people can use their talent to turn waste into art for exhibition and for sale. I have trained some ambassadors [students] on how to use plastic bottles to make waste bins. I have tasked them that in two weeks, all of them are to produce their own art and bring it for exhibition,” he explained.

Mr. Hamidu appealed for support for students who will be participating in the art exhibition. This he said will encourage other students to follow suit. He also mentioned that work has begun in the electoral area to turn plastic waste into bricks that can be used for community projects.
