Gov’t gives approval for the recruitment of over 16 thousand teachers

Government, through the Ministry of Finance, has given financial clearance for the Ghana Education Service (GES) to engage the services of some 16 thousand newly trained teachers. This was contained in a letter signed by a Deputy Minister of Education Madam Abena Osei-Asare on behalf of the Minister Dr. Yaw Adutwum, and copied to the Auditor General and Director-General of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).

The Education Ministry also implored the Service to act to ensure that the details of the teachers to be engaged are processed quickly.

“Financial clearance is hereby granted the Hon. Minister of Education to enable the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service recruit sixteen thousand, eight hundred and fifty (16,850) Newly Trained Teachers for the Service. Approval is also granted for their emoluments to be charged against the Compensation of Employees vote of Ministry of Education in the 2021 budget,” the statement said.

The statement continued to say “the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service is to ensure that the Newly Trained Teachers have their documents processed in time and placed on the mechanized payroll early enough to enable the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department effect payment of their salaries” warning that the financial clearance is only valid until December 31 late this year.

Deputy Minister of Education, Madam Osei-Asare directed the GES to ensure that all statutory deductions are made on the salaries of the teacher who would be engaged in keeping with the law.

“By a copy of this letter, the Controller and Accountant-General is requested to effect the payment of salaries of the Newly Trained Teachers and make appropriate deductions of Social Security and Income Tax to SSNIT and the Domestic Tax Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) respectively,” the statement said.
