The Upper West Regional Director of Health Services has expressed worry about the seeming apathetic response to the health and safety protocols of COVI-19 in recent times. The Regional Director of Health Service Dr. Damien Punguyire said for most people in the region, life had returned to normal while the region had seen increased social mobility.

He said the situation is worrying as it leaves the region vulnerable to subsequent waves of the pandemic. Dr Punguyire shared these concerns when he spoke to the media at Wa in the Upper West Region. He mentioned that the region has recorded 745 cases of the various since March 2020. 36 people succumbed to the disease. The region currently has no active case.

On vaccination, the Regional Director of Health Services said the region had received over 210 thousand doses of 3 different types of COVID-19 vaccines. Out of the figure, 124,480 doses had been administered to some 91,017 people across the region. Dr. Punguyire said 19 percent of the entire population had been full vaccinated while only 5 percent of the targeted population [public excluding pregnant women and persons below the age of 18] had been vaccinated.

He said the number of persons vaccinated across the region was woefully inadequate and encouraged the populace to get vaccinated. He said the reported side effects which include fever, dizziness and headaches are known side effects related to vaccines.

“The vaccine is safe and free for all within the targeted group. Mass vaccination allows us to come together, shoulder to shoulder, in schools, communities and in places of worship. They are a key way to end the COVID pandemic so that we can get back to doing the things we enjoy with the people we love,” the Director reminded.
