The District Chief Executive of the Nabdam District Assembly in the Upper East Region, Madam Agnes Anamoo has charged all farmers within the district to take absolute advantage of the government’s flagship programme Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) and migrate from subsistence farming to large scale farming.

According to her, three(3) of the five(5) modules of planting for food and jobs have been implemented in the district, making it worthwhile for farmers to fully venture into farming as a business.

She made this passionate imploration during the 37th edition of the Farmers’ Day celebration held at Sekoti in Nabdam.

She said the PFJ’s first area of focus in the district was to improve food security in food crops ranging from cereal and grains to vegetables.

“The Planting For Food and Jobs is structured in five(5) modules of which three(3) have been implemented in the District. The first area was to improve food security in crops such as maize, rice, sorghum, soyabeans, cowpea, groundnut, orange flesh sweet potatoes and vegetable crops like tomato, pepper, onion and lettuce. I hereby wish to entreat our farmers and the general public to take advantage of these interventions to go into farming as a business and possibly upscale along with the production, processing, storage, transportation and marketing value chain of our food commodities,” Madam Anamoo stated.

She went on to impress upon people of the area particularly the youth to adhere to road traffic regulations and also get vaccinated against the deadly COVID19 pandemic as the festive seasons beckons.

The theme for this year’s event was ‘Planting For Food and Jobs: Consolidating food systems’. Kenneth Kapoti, emerged as the Overall Best Farmer of the district and as such walked away with a tricycle, a Cutlass, a bar of key soap, a radio set and a certificate of honour.

Kenneth Kapoti expressed his delight and gratitude to the government after clinching the prestigious award and appealed to the latter to try its best possible and make the awards more attractive so as to attract the youth into agriculture.

He said attracting the youth into agriculture would help clamp down insecurity in the district.
