Zuarungu shooting: Eyewitness recounts incident, says residents are living in fear

An eye witness to the shooting of the Police officers at Zuarungu in the Upper East Region, Simon Ayambire said the incident has left residents in the area terrified. Recounting the incident to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Mr. Ayambire said sometime after 7 pm yesterday, December 15, 2021, armed men besieged the premises of a retail shop around the Zuarungu market.

He said after taking an unknown cash amount from the shop owner, the robbers, trying to make the escape saw some policemen approaching the scene. Mr. Ayambire explained that the officers were not aware of the ongoing robbery. Unfortunately, they caught the eye of the robbers and were shot at.

The bullet hit the petrol tank of the motorbike the officers were riding. The motorbike then burst into flames and burnt to the rider of the motorbike.

The pillion rider was also hit with bullets from the robbers fell off the motorbike and then into a nearby gutter.

Mr. Ayambire the robbery incident isn’t the first in the area. He called on the police to increase visibility in the area to avoid similar incidents.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service is mourning its officers who died in a while on patrol within the Zuarungu township of the Upper East Region. The Service, in a post on its official social media handles called for discernment in circulating information about the incident.
