The Vice-Chancellor of the Bolgatanga Technical University Professor Samuel Alnaa has expressed confidence that enrolment into Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) at both the pre-tertiary and tertiary levels will increase in the coming years.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Professor Alnaa said gradually, the flawed notion that unintelligent people were the ones interested in TVET is changing. He said while this is good for the sector and for the country, the government must brace itself to deal with the many gaps in education within the sector to allow for it to succeed.

He explained that for teaching and training to be effective for students in the sector, there needs to be a reasonable teacher and technician to student ratio. This he said will allow for students to be given the need practical knowledge they need.

“In TVET education if the enrolment is not controlled, at the end of the day we may not be able to achieve what we want to achieve because if you have so many people in the classroom how do you do good practicals?”

“It may mean that you have to put them in blocks and that becomes problematic. So for TVET, it is better when the numbers are small so that you can actually give good concentration to the students. If we have an increase in enrolment, then we must necessarily have an increment in the number of staff; the lecturers in the classroom and the technicians in the workshop,” he explained.

He said to better the education experience at the Bolgatanga Technical University, new programmes have been introduced. These include; HND in Electrical Engineering, Medical Laboratory Technology and Banking and Finance.

Professor Alnaa explained that the institution has had to inculcate some non-TVET programmes into their education system to allow students to learn some entrepreneurship skills to help market their trade.
