The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has locked up the old abattoir in Bolgatanga after the continued failure by the butchers to move to the newly constructed ultramodern slaughterhouse at Yorogo.

Speaking to A1 News after the abattoir was locked up, the Butchers admitted that the deadline given to them by the Assembly to move had elapsed. According to the Secretary Bolgatanga Butchers’ Association, Timothy Tembil said conditions that will facilitate their moving to the new abattoir at Yorogo had not been met so they would not be able to move.

His comments are in direct contradiction to comments he made earlier when certain media reports suggested that the butchers were not ready to move.

Key among their recommendations according to Mr. Tembil is their insistence that the Assembly moves the livestock market close to the new abattoir in order for them to cut down the cost of transportation.

“We suggested that for us to move there, cost of production of meat have to be considered, so we said the cattle market should move there and also the small ruminant market should move closer to Yorogo”.

“Because they [Butchers] feel that, a factory should be sited where the raw materials are, you can’t go and put up a tomatoes factory where they don’t produce tomato. So we the Executives we made this point over and over to the Assembly for the past five years but the Assembly keep on saying that they will do that after we move there”

Meanwhile, when A1 News visited the newly constructed abattoir at Yorogo, the facility was open but not even a single butcher was there for any operational purpose.

     New facility opened for use

A1 News has gathered that while the Executives of the Butchers Association had agreed to relocate, some members of the Association strong kicked against the move. Sources at the Assembly also told the News Team that the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) invited the aggrieved parties to able to iron out issues, but the said parties who insisted that they cannot move to the Yorogo facility failed to show up to the meeting.
