The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has extended that date for the relocation of butchers to the ultramodern abattoir built at Yorongo. The Assembly intended to move the butchers to the new facility by December 15, 2021 but upon further consultation and negotiation, the Assembly has extended date for relocation by 16 days.

Speaking on A1 News, the Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga said the date has been changed to January 1, 2022.

When A1 Radio contacted the Secretary of the Bolgatanga Butchers Association Timothy Yinbil, he confirmed the agreement with the Assembly.

Background

It would be recalled that the Assembly on November 19, 2021 at its Second General Assembly meeting directed the butchers to move to the newly built abattoir before December 15, 2021.

The Presiding Member for the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Mr. Rawfield Abileo Nyaaba explained that the assembly may have to resort to the application of force to compel butchers to relocate to the new facility if they fail to meet the December 15 deadline as agreed by the Assembly.

But, butchers in the Bolgatanga Municipality said they were unaware of the MCE Rex Asanga’s directive that they [the butchers] were to vacate their current location by December 15.

They described as untrue claims that they had had consultative meetings with the Assembly and had arrived at an agreeable conclusion. They said the last meeting the butchers had with the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly was in 2019 under the former MCE’s watch.

Meanwhile, some chiefs in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region had earlier called on the Municipal Chief Executive of Bolgatanga to use his office to put the abandoned Abattoir at Yorigo to use. The facility which was completed in December 2018 by the World Bank at a cost of GH₵2m has since not been occupied by the butchers.

The chiefs made this call when Mr. Asanga paid a courtesy call on them to introduce himself as the MCE for the Bolgatanga Municipality and solicit their support.
