We’re not on strike, BMA’s preventing us from working – Bolga Butchers Association

The Bolgatanga Butchers Association has said that they have not embarked on a sit-down strike. The Association explained that the current situation where they are unable to slaughter animals and prepare their carcasses for sale to consumers should be blamed on the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly.

The butchers recounted that they got to the slaughterhouse on the morn of January 19, 2022 only to realize that the facility had been put under lock and key by the officials of the Municipal Assembly.

The Secretary of the Butchers Association, Timothy Tembil made these clarifications when he spoke to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East.

“Butchers are not on strike. It is the Assembly that has prevented us from working at the old abattoir by locking it. In fact, they gave us the letter. IN the letter it was stated that from the 18th of January, officers with the Environmental Health Department and veterinary staff would relocate to the new abattoir at Yorogo and so they will not be operating at the old abattoir. From 17th January to Yesterday and today, the facility has been under lock and key,” he explained.

“This is exactly why we are not operating,” he added.

Mr. Tembil while agreeing that the new facility offers a more conducive operating atmosphere, insisted that the move is at great expense to the many young butchers who offer a varying number of services.

The Bolgatanga Butchers Association has suggested that it is unable to relocate to Yorogo after its initial agreement with the Municipal Assembly because members of the youth within their ranks are strongly against the move.

Meanwhile, speaking on the same platform, Mr. Tembil explained that the Association has had to renege on its initial agreement to relocate due to pressing concerns from the youth. These sentiments were shared when Mr. Tembil spoke to Samuel Mbura on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East.
