Lacking of planning, consultation causing chaos and confusion – GNAPS on education reforms

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has expressed grave worry about the continuous reforms in the Education reforms within the last few years. The Association insists that the education sector is currently characterized by ‘chaos and confusion’ because of the lack of planning, consultation and proper implementation of the many reforms that have happened in the area in recent times.

Speaking on the back of recent moves by the Ghana Education Service to implement a semester system instead of the pre-existing trimester system, GNAPS argued that there should have been proper research and due diligence done.

The President of GNAPS, Dr. Damasus Tuurosong, speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East was worried about the hurried implementation of the new academic calendar asking “what is the rationale for implementing the semester system?”

Dr. Damasus explained that the Ghana Education Service and its mother body, the Ministry of Education has been unable to explain succinctly the reason for the change in the academic calendar because there is no good reason.

He said private schools would continue the trimester system because “we are dealing with young tender brains and after some months of academic work [in school] would need some respite”. He continued to say “I do not why any child should continue in school for 20 weeks, continuous, for only a short break”.
