Private legal practitioner, Lawyer John Ndebugri has described the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) as “immoral, illegal and an abuse of power”. He said the proposition of the tax is in direct contradiction against the Internal Revenue Act 892 which regulates income taxes in the country.

Lawyer Ndegudri expressed surprise that government would propose a tax that would be added to electronic transactions even after individuals would have paid taxes on their chargeable income.

“It [the e-levy] is not only illegal, it is immoral and complete abuse of power. This is the legal basis of opposing the E-levy. The E-levy has no basis. All they will try to do is use Executive Authority to pass a law which is contrary to law that is already existing,” he said.

He charged Ghanaians to inform the representative in Parliament to completely shun the proposed tax adding that “any MP who votes for the E-levy is assisting in the abuse of power and must not be voted back to Parliament. It is a complete abuse of power”.

“After you have taken the tax, what will you use it for? You will use it hir hire planes and be bathing in the air. And when you’re asked to come to Parliament to come and explain how these expenditures are incurred, you have refused to do it. If I was in Parliament, I would insist that one of the conditions for the E-levy to be even considered, is for the Presidential travels to be explained”.
