A Security Analyst and Director of the Institute for Intelligence and Strategic Security, Moses Jatuat has predicted three more possible military takeovers in West Africa in the coming years if biting economic sanctions are not imposed by the Economic Community of West African States. The sanctions, he said, are supposed to serve as deterrence to other countries.
His comments come on the back of the recent military take-overs in Guinea, Mali and the recent to join the league of countries in the same situation, Burkina Faso, who ousted her President, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré through coup plots.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Mr. Jantuat said the recent happenings where countries have been taken over by Military Junta is a matter of concern and urged that the Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) chaired by President Nana Addo-Danquah Akufo Addo should begin to initiate steps to solve the trend of military take-overs.
He bemoaned that, ECOWAS is not doing enough to deal with the issues surrounding these but rather will wait until damages are done before they instigate sanctions on the countries involved. This, Mr. Jatuat said, is not biting enough to deter other states from seizing power from civil Presidents in the sub Regions of West Africa.
“If we have bad Presidents, bad Heads of States who are manipulating their constitutions or governing in the manner that is unconditional why can’t ECOWAS intervene? We allow the coup to happen and we issue sanctions. So are we going to wait for another coup to happen so we say we’ve suspended this country?” he quizzed.
He explained sometime last year, ‘there were predictions, indeed some of us indicated that look, West African countries, Ghana included is not immune to from what was happening and therefore there is the need for managers of the country, Security Administrators to pay keen attention to the very fundamental issues affecting the people”.
Adding that “No one expected that Burkina Faso will go through that. In fact, there is even predictions or concern that from now to next year there is going to be three more, therefore it is something that the national government needs to pay attention to”.
