Food haulage could become a problem due to continuous increase in fuel prices – CWAN

Due to the continuous increase in the prices of petroleum products and the subsequent increase in transport fares, hauling large amounts of food “from where it is available to where it is needed” could gradually become a ginormous problem.

Experts say this situation could play out in two ways; there could either be food shortages in parts of the country due to the rising costs of food haulage or there could be a sharp increase in the prices of food.

Emmanuel Wullingdool, an Agriculture Consultant who doubles as the Executive Director for the Centre for Women in Agriculture and Nutrition (CWAN) shared these sentiments when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East.

“We are told that transport fares are going up by a minimum of 15 per cent. If that happens, where these haulage trucks are concerned moving food from one location to the other is going to attract higher costs translating into higher prices; higher than what we already have”.

“When situations like these happen, those in the low-income bracket are going to be severely affected,” he said.

To this end, Mr Wullingdool has called on the government to move away from lip service and invest more money into ensuring that some of the flagship agriculture programmes that were introduced are properly implemented.
