A Member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John-Paul Danka has opined that the private individuals and businesses who contributed the Ghc105,000 towards the construction of the National Cathedral do not necessarily have the development and forward movement of the region at heart.

Mr. Danka said the move has only solidified Stephen Yakubu’s position as Regional Minister in the eyes of the President but does nothing to support to the socio-economic growth of the region.

“All those who contributed towards that exercise have only helped the Regional Minister, to as it is, secure his job. They have not done anything for the people of the Upper East Region. They have only helped the Minister to look good in the eyes of the President so that his [the Regional Minister’s] job would be guaranteed,” he said.

Speaking on Day Break Upper East, Mr. Danka suggested that if people had such quantum of money, it would have been more prudent to direct same to the direct development of the region through the provision of potable water, roads, hospitals, furniture for schools and many other basic social infrastructure.

He said, the Minister should have rather used his influence as Minister to raise funds to address the basic needs of the people rather than wait on central government’s intervention.

“We have a child who has a hole in heart, BOGISS had a similar health situation. We know that in the Municipality here, there are some schools that lack furniture, what has been done about it?” he asked.

Mr. Danka explained that once the Minister has been able to use his influence to raise such a colossal amount of money, he [the Minister] should do same to address all the basic infrastructural problems in the Region.

Meanwhile, the Upper Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has called out sections of the public he believes are just trying to rubbish the donations over to the Secretariat of the National Cathedral by the Regional Coordinating Council.

The Ghc105,000 donation was made in support of the building of the National Cathedral.

According to Mr. Yakubu residents of the region should have been proud of the donation rather than try to ridicule the contribution made by the region.
