The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has disclosed that businesses and residents in the Upper East Region owe the company more than Ghc131 million. This figure has accumulated since 1987, when NEDCo was first introduced to the region.
Speaking with the media after a meeting with the PURC led by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Ishmael Ackah in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Area Manager of NEDCO, Eugene Odoi Addo, explained that while the company has continued to pursue debtors to pay what they owe, the figure continues to balloon.
Mr. Addo again disclosed that last year, the company lost 23 per cent of the power it acquired for distribution through the non-payment of utility bills.
“We do our best within our means, our resources to let our customers pay. We sometimes even go through the courts to chase customers. We have also come up with a prepaid system where customers pay for power upfront. So we are doing everything possible, including the use of technology, to improve the collection,” he said.

NEDCo, in its attempt to improve revenue mobilisation, has revamped its Whistleblower system. This system compensates residents who report households or businesses that illegally connect to the national grid.
On the issue of revenue mobilisation, Mr. Addo said current disturbances in Bawku is posing difficulties for the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
