The Ghana Water Company Limited is still battling with the non-payment of debts. The Company has said that it is owed more than Ghc1 million by residents and businesses.

The situation, according to the Upper East Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company (GWCL), Hanson Mensah Akutteh, is having dire consequences on the activities of the company.

“There is the non-payment of bill. When we send the bills to customers, we expect them to do their part by on time, the amount that we send them to pay. Some of them, we send them the bills and they refuse to pay. This is a challenge we are trying to deal with within the region,” he said.

Mr. Akutteh continued to say, “so far, we are having more than Ghc1 million in revenue losses with respect to non-payment of bills. We are running what we call revenue mobilization to ensure that all our customers who refuse to pay are brought to book”.

The Regional Manager of the GWCL said together with the courts, some monies have been retrieved. He hoped that with the continued collaboration, more recalcitrant customers would be forced to cough up monies owed the Company.

Other issues affecting the operations of the GWCL are illegal operations and theft of meters.

“People connect water to their homes without recourse to the company. It is not right. We think that, for us to serve them better, they should desist from that so that we can share the water equally to everybody”.

“There is also the upsurge of meter theft. Currently, people are trying to steal out meters within the environment of our consumers. It is unacceptable. These are all assets and costs that are part of the services we offer to customers and we don’t see why somebody should go and vandalize and steal these meters,” he said worryingly.

Mr. Akutteh said the GWCL limited is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service (GPS), the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to be able to address the concerns about theft. He said in the past few days, 10 meters have been stolen.

This came to light when the Upper East Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company (GWCL), Hanson Mensah Akutteh spoke to the media today, Thursday, March 10, 2022. This was after a closed-door meeting with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional Capital.
