Samuel Akaamah, a member of the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Upper East Regional Communication Team has blamed the rising cost of food products, livestock and poultry in the region on the increasing number of funerals happening concurrently.

Mr. Akaamah explained that due to the continued easing of COVID-19 restrictions, many families are taking the opportunity to begin to perform the funeral rites of their loved ones who may have passed on during when COVID restrictions were stiffer.

He said this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East.

“In this region, this is the time funerals have started. Almost every day, you see funerals, so many of them. Every day, you will see funerals going on. This is as a result of the ban on funerals due to the COVID-19”.

“For about 2 years, people were not allowed to perform funerals. Now that the opportunity has come to perform funerals, everyone is performing funerals. We use so much food in performing funerals. No one can perform funerals without food. That has also affected the prices of food commodities around here”.

“Last year, last two years, when you went to the market, you wouldn’t see the prices of food going up and this is where the prices of animals, the prices of food commodities will actually go high. When we want to have our discussions, let us consider some of these things,” he said.

Mr. Akaamah chided the PFAG’s Dr. Charles Nyaabah for what he described as “running down the Minister for Agriculture”. He said the country must realize that the NPP, led by the Agric Minister, Dr. Afriyie Akoto had done a stupendous job in the agriculture sector.

He admitted that while there have been some challenges, the successes have been more than the shortfalls.
