Counsel for some 14 implicated judges in the ongoing judicial bribery scandal Lawyer John Ndebugri has questioned the authority of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to be protected by heavy security forces.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas in a video has caught more than 30 judges and about a 100 court officials taking bribes. It is alleged that they received bribes or engaged in corrupt activities to influence justice as captured in the controversial video.

The two-year investigative video, titled ‘Ghana in the Eyes of God” has generated a lot of apprehension and brought to fore a legal tussle and debate on whether it should be shown publicly or not.

Lawyer John Ndebugri is representing some judges implicated in the video who have filed suits in court to stop the showing of the video on all media platforms. Showing of the videos according to Ndebugri “will stifle the legal process of dealing with the matter which is before the judicial council”

Speaking on “Hot Issues” on Accra based TV3 Saturday, lawyer Ndebugri questioned the reason for the heavy protection given to Anas who arrived at the premises of the Supreme Court on Friday to be cross-examined by the committee investigating the bribery scandal.

“I saw Anas today being guarded by Special Forces in a special car with many other cars accompanying him. Why? He is just a common citizen of Ghana. I deserve protection than he Anas because i can just move out of here and someone will shoot me” he said.

Mr. Ndebugri added that providing heavy security for the investigative journalist is not essential and questioned why he (Anas) should be provided with security and immunity which he said can only be granted to staff of institutions who blow the whistle on suspected mismanagement under the whistle blowers act.

I deserve more protection than Anas” he added.

There will be a contempt of court if any institution or individual continues the serialization of excerpts of the said damming videos which according to the lawyer are not implicating per the few he has watched.
