The rising prices of fertilizer on the market coupled with the continuous ecological changes have led to several conversations around food security in the country. The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto admitted in a recent interview on Accra based Asempa FM that, the prices of some food commodities in some parts of the country were high.
On this backdrop, the Upper East Regional Director for the Department of Food and Agriculture, Francis Ennor has made a passionate call to people of the region to embrace backyard gardening as a means of averting the food challenges.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East Show with Mark Smith, Mr. Ennor admitted that the ecological changes and the hikes in the prices of fertilizer on the market would continuously affect the annual yields of farmers. This will culminate in an increase in food prices.
The Agric Director said, “this is the time I want to advise us to all take backyard gardening seriously.”
He further encouraged individuals who had small portions of land around their homes to consider using it for backyard gardening to avoid buying certain vegetables from the market.
“I want to encourage people with potions of land around their households to produce their own produce; produce your own food rather than spending money on them.,” he said.
Backyard gardening is the act of turning an outside space around your home into a productive space for plants. A backyard garden can supply a family with fresh greens and vegetables daily. It also saves the family or individual some time and money.
