Ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) annual constituency delegates conference to elect constituency executives across the country, a notable face that will be missing out on the ballot paper is Fatawu Sumaila.

Mr. Sumaila contested as Women Organizer for the Zebilla Constituency in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region in 2018 but lost.

The position of Women Organizer in the country has always been contested by women but Mr. Sumaila changed the narrative by venturing into the area to lead the party’s women wing in the Zebilla constituency.

“I contested the position because women can contest any position of the party. But I have never seen men contesting the Women Organizer position. Moreover, that position is not only meant for women, but men can contest it as well,” he said.

He was in the race with 4 women but lost to Asaaba Fatima Osman. Four years down the line, Fatawu has hung his boots, paving way for only women to vie for the position.

He attributed his decision to bow out of the Women Organizer position because of disunity and factionalism among party folks.

The 36-year-old native of Zebilla who spoke exclusively to A1 NEWS was full of joy saying his decision to break the gender bias has opened gates for men who may want to vie for the Women Organizer position of the party in the future.

Fatawu said he has since become popular in the Zebilla constituency and the country at large after he made that bold decision in 2018.

The governing New Patriotic Party is set to hold its annual constituency delegates conference from April 28th to May 4, 2022. A statement from the party said the congress will take place regardless of the statutory holidays; May Day and Eid-Ul-Fitr.
