The National Youth has officially launched the Upper East Regional Youth Parliament to help mentor young people in leadership. The Youth Parliament would also grant the teeming youth in the region the opportunity to have their voices heard in decision making to further strengthen the country’s democracy.

The Youth Parliament comprises members from the various District and Municipalities Youth Parliaments in the region.

Speaking at the event, the Upper East Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Francis Tekyi Kwarenteng admonished the Youth Parliamentarians to be disciplined because having attained the status of a Youth Parliamentarian, it will be expected of them to hold themselves appropriately.

He stated, “it is a check on them because if you are being called an Honorable Member of a Youth Parliament, it means that eyes are on you. People see you and watch you to ensure that you are a role model. So, for you to be given that respect, you will also check yourself to be sure that you act accordingly.”

“… then also it is a way of building them [the youth] towards the national Parliament. From the demonstration they made, it means that some of them are already on course and within a short period of time I won’t be surprised to see some of them even in the national parliament,” he continued.

Mr. Kwaranteng said that forming the Upper East Regional Youth Parliament is the next step to forming the National Youth Parliament. According to him the Region is the last to form its Youth Parliament. This means that processes can start for the National Youth Parliament.
