The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency, Peter Lanchene Toobu has stated that pressure group, #FixtheCountry failed to note that there is no alternative for police in the constitution.

He made the statement in relation to demands by the group to embark on a demonstration with private security. #FixtheCountry served a notice to the police of their decision to embark on a demonstration against the Agyapa deal, cessation of the Achimota Forest Reserve and not to tamper with the country’s security.

In their notice, they requested to be allowed to contract armed private security personnel to protect the demonstrators.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show on Friday, Mr. Toobu said the constitution states clearly that nobody can establish any organization to do police work without an act of parliament.

“They (#FixtheCountry) have failed to note that, there is no alternative for the police in the constitution. The constitution self clearly states that nobody can establish any other organization to do police work without an act of parliament.”

He went further to say that any private organization in this “country has a connection with the police and that is why the police create the Private Security Organization.” The Directorate is under the Inspector General of the Police.

Mr. Toobu who is also a former Superintendent of police says there is no way the #FixtheCountry group can even get any private security to provide them security without the police agreeing to that. He said even police do not go to protect demonstrators with AK47’s and bullets.
