A pressure group christened Arise Ghana, says the demands by the fix the country movement are genuine.

His comment comes on the back of demands by the #Fix the country group to embark on a demonstration with their own private security.

The #Fix the country movement served a notice to the police of their decision to embark on a demonstration against the Agyapa deal, cessation of the Achimota Forest Reserve and not to tamper with the country’s security.

In an interview on the Daybreak Upper East Show on A1 Radio, the convener of Arise Ghana, Selorm Dramani expounded that the, although he does not subscribe to the decision of the #Fix the Country to stage the demonstration with their own private security, the latter’s resolve sends a signal that the group has lost trust in the police’s ability to offer protection to its members.

“I do not endorse the use of violence to address issues; I do not endorse that. But the point must be made that #FixTheCountry, although I’m not a member, judging them from when they started to the stage they are now, they have clearly spelt out their objectives and their objectives never included the use of guns but I think they have resorted to that thing in their letter because of the police brutality in the system where the police are killing particularly young men and women now.”

“That’s why they are afraid to even have the police protect them during their demonstration and they are now asking the police to stay away, they can protect themselves,” he explained.

Mr. Dramani further stressed that while he disapproves of the group’s demand to carry their own ammunition their reasons are legitimate and must not be overlooked.

“In my candid view, those are legitimate reasons, those are cogent reasons. So we can discourage them from carrying weapons during their demonstration, but we cannot wish away or dismiss the concerns they have raised about how police are callously killing young men,” he added.

Mr. Dramani however expressed his disapproval of the carrying of arms by demonstrators saying the act contravenes the laws of the country.

Arise Ghana in May 25, 2022 announced at its maiden press conference in Accra that it plans on staging a “mammoth” demonstration on 21st June, 2022.

The group said the demonstration has been necessitated by the hardships being experienced by citizens in the country. Members of the group among other things want the government to reduce fuel prices as soon as possible.
