The MCE for the Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga has launched the Green Ghana Campaign in Bolgtanaga with a call on residents to be committed to the reforestation of the country.

Speaking at a brief ceremony, Mr. Asanga, worried about the consequences of desertification explained that the protection of the environment against the effects of climate change is a national responsibility.

The MCE explained that years before, boreholes were sunk at depths of only 30-50 feet. The same cannot be said for the situation now, he said.

“We must create awareness and personal commitment to greening Ghana. 20 million trees are being planted across the country. What we are doing here is symbolic. We want to elicit a certain level of personal commitment. Every month, each one of us should consider planting trees in every corner. We must plant trees even when building houses. Once houses are completed fully, the trees would have taken shape.”

A total of 210,000 seedlings are being distributed within the Bolgatanga Forest Zone.

Mr. Asanga explained that there is an apparent difference between the vegetation in Ghana and the vegetation of Ghana’s neighbours; Burkina Faso.

“Burkina has had to double its steps and effort of greening the area to fight desertification. There is a commitment not only to planting but also protection of the planted trees,” he said.

The President of Ghana, H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo launched the 2022 Edition of Green Ghana Day, at the Accra International Conference Centre. The theme for this year’s exercise is “Mobilizing for a Greener Future” and it is scheduled for June 10, 2022.

The President in his keynote address said that forests continue to be one of Ghana’s most important resources but regrettably there is a substantial decline in the country’s forest cover.

The President, therefore, called for concerted efforts to combat this menace. The Green Ghana Initiative seeks to create a collective action towards the restoration of degraded landscapes in the country, mitigate climate change and inculcate in the youth the values of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits, he continued.

Samuel A. Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in his statement, thanked the President and Ghanaians for their support for Green Ghana as the planting target of 5 million trees was exceeded by 2 million.

The Minister said that efforts at restoring Ghana’s forests in the past had not been effective and forceful, hence, the Green Ghana Project which was to drive efforts towards an aggressive afforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of Ghana which contributes to the global efforts to fight climate change.
