Some 210,000 seedlings are expected to be distributed within the Bolgatanga Forest District of the Upper East Region as part of activities making the Green Ghana Day.

The seedlings include moringa, cashew, teak, mahogany, neem, and eucalyptus amongst others.

The Upper East Region is expected to plant a total of 650,000 trees. This exceeds last year’s target of 170,000. The region has been divided into 3 distinct forest zones.

They are the Bolgatanga Forest Zone, the Navrongo Forest Zone and the Bawku Forest Zone.

The Bolgatanga Forest Zone comprises the Bolgatanga Municipality, Bolgatanga East District, Nabdam District, Talensi District and the Bongo District.

Speaking at the launch of the Green Ghana Day at the premises of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, the Bolga Forest District Manager, Henry Opoku Boateng explained that there are more than enough seedlings available for planting.

Mr. Boateng reiterated the need for the region to maintain its forest cover.

He said while a huge number of the seedlings have already been distributed to the districts under his jurisdiction, there are still seedlings available for persons and organisations who are still interested.

Speaking at a brief ceremony, Mr. Asanga, worried about the consequences of desertification explained that the protection of the environment against the effects of climate change is a national responsibility.

The MCE explained that years before, boreholes were sunk at depths of only 30-50 feet. The same cannot be said for the situation now, he said.

“We must create awareness and personal commitment to greening Ghana. 20 million trees are being planted across the country. What we are doing here is symbolic. We want to elicit a certain level of personal commitment. Every month, each one of us should consider planting trees in every corner. We must plant trees even when building houses. Once houses are completed fully, the trees would have taken shape.”
