Students of the Bongo-Namoo Primary and JHS in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region have been educated on the importance of planting and tending to trees to ensure their survival.

The students were reminded of the rather popular saying that suggests that “if the last tree dies, the last man dies” by George Fredua Ansu, a Timber Inspector with the Timber Industry Development Department (TIDD), a division under the Ghana Forestry Commission in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

Speaking to A1 Radio about the sensitization exercise that took place on the Green Ghana Day, Mr. Fredua Ansu explained that it is important to get children at the basic level to appreciate the importance of tree planting and reforesting as Ghana races to deal with the negative effects of climate change.

“Tree is life and life is a tree. This is what I was telling them [the students]. Once they have been able to understand that, when they go home, they will plant more trees and take care of them for them to grow. Look, we have to be intentional about the issue of tree growing,” he said.

After the education, Mr. Fredua Ansu led his team to plant some plants within the premises of the school under strict conditions that the students would ensure the survival of the plants.

Earlier, Mr. Fredua Ansu revealed that the Timber Industry Development Department (TIDD), of the Ghana Forestry Commission in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, is leading the Bongo-Namoo community to plant 5 million mahogany trees in the coming months.

Meanwhile, some 3,000 trees have already been planted in keeping with the activities of the President’s Green Ghana Day. As part of the planting activities under the Green Ghana Day, mahogany, teak, kapok (used for wawa boards), rosewood et al were planted.
