UE: We see challenges as part of our activities – Farmers lament

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) in the Upper East Region has described the challenges farmers are facing as ones they are quite familiar with.

The Association said over the past few years, it has been complaining about the many problems that are hindering them from farming successfully but nothing tangible has been done to address the situation, forcing them to take those challenges as part of their daily activities.

The Upper East Regional Spokesperson for (PFAG), Reverend John Akaribo speaking on A1 Radio’s Reporters Visit noted that the successive governments cannot claim ignorance of the many challenges farmers grapple with.

According to Rev. Akaribo, continuous increase in prices of fertilizer in the country, inadequate tractors for farmers and farmer groups coupled with insufficiency of combine harvesters for farmers across the region have come to stay.

“The challenges [of farmers] are so numerous that we will not like to mention them, and we don’t see them as challenges anymore but we see them as part of our activities. So with respect to fertilizer, we don’t want to talk more about those things because they are now more political, our main challenge is mechanization. We need tractors but this time tractors are not there, even people have rice to harvest at this time but they find it difficult to get combine harvesters. These are all challenges that government is aware of so we don’t want to talk about them again,” he said.

Rev. Akaribo further stated that the farmers now have to take their challenging issues into their own hands, by putting measures in place by addressing them in their own way. “We are managing our issues, we are addressing our challenges, we are identifying our problems and making sure that we will find solutions to all of them one day,” he said.
