The Bawku Central constituency Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress  has expressed fear that the party risk losing the Bawku central constituency seat in the 2016 general elections due to what he has described as a deliberate attempt by some individuals to take absolute control of the party for their parochial interest.

The Bawku constituency seat which is currently occupied by Minister of Environment Hon. Mahama Ayariga has been a traditionally safe seat for the party since 1992. This however is most likely to change in the 2016 elections following what is suspected to be a deep seated disunity amongst the rank and file of the party in the constituency.

The party’s constituency chairman in an interview with Azongo Albert said the performance of the party in the previous elections have dropped significantly due to some ethnic undertones which if not curtailed will distort the fortunes of the party in the next general elections. The fuming chairman accused the party constituency secretary and Member of Parliament Hon. Mahama Ayriga of refusing to recognize and cooperate with him.

“I wanted to bring back the vibrancy which existed in the party in 1992 and 1996 but this is what they are seriously working against. For now I am having the fear that if we don’t take care we are likely to lose the seat because the way they even go about campaigning is even a foul campaign. In our party constitution a party executive is never allowed to campaign for any of the candidates but what I am gathering is that some of the party executives are doing so. I have sent them text messages cautioning them to desist from it and never do that because in an event that one candidate emerge, it will be difficult for the executives to bring them together as one party so that we can wrestle power from the NPP” he said.

According to him, the party did not have a constituency office because the office space that housed the party was abandoned and left unattended to and hence could not function as a party office. He noted that a recent renovation of the supposed party office by Alhaji Ibrahim Dori a parliamentary aspirant is the development that has made the office accommodative in the meantime.

“Before I assumed office, they did not operate from the party office for reasons best known to those in control of the party by then. When I took over I saw it necessary to maintain the office so that anybody who wants us can see us and anybody who needs information about the running of the party can come to the party office. So I quickly initiated a way of maintaining the party but I could not move further because of lack of funds.”

He added that the party in the Bawku constituency is ill prepared for the November 7 primaries because the recently held biometric registration exercise faced series of challenges which has left many party members unregistered.

He said “I cannot tell you the number of registered voters, those who have taken their cards and those who are yet to take their cards. I can’t give you that information because my executives especially the party secretary is not ready to work in the party office. This is the challenge I am foreseeing because in an event that the elections are conducted, I have the strong conviction that any of the candidates can protest.”

Some youth who spoke to A1 Radio’s news team said they have not been registered but hoping they will be able to do so before the November 7 parliamentary primaries.
