A former Upper East Regional Minister and Minister of State at the Presidency, Rockson Bukari has called on Government to ensure that teachers are satisfied. He said the government can do this by paying them properly, building houses for them and catering to their basic needs.

He made this statement in an Exclusive interview with A1 Radio at his residence.

According to Mr. Rockson, the work of teachers has been undermined causing it to lose the enviable respect it once had.

He further stated that teachers are responsible for taking care of the youth and nurturing them for the future. If they aren’t satisfied, they wouldn’t concentrate on delivering their best because they are always thinking of how to take care of their families.

“So all that is happening is that they should build houses for teachers and pay them properly because they are taking care of the youth. The future leaders of this country.”

Responding to a question on whether there was a link between the satisfaction of teachers and academic performance, he responded in the affirmative. He said he believes that when teachers are satisfied and had peace of mind, they can teach properly.

“When teachers are satisfied and they have peace of mind, they can teach properly.”

The former regional minister further alluded that, teachers are responsible for the discipline of children and have been trained to understand and handle students from different environments. But if teachers are not satisfied with their status and policies, they wouldn’t put in their best.

”Children come from different environments with different mannerisms. We have extroverts and introverts. And the teachers will know how to handle them. But if the teachers are not satisfied, you are leaving your home, your pocket is empty; you have not eaten well. Your family is not feeling fine. How can you teach? So all that is happening, they should satisfy teachers and lecturers.”
