A resource Centre worth Gh¢39, 550.00 has been commissioned in Kongo to render welfare services to persons with disability in the Nabdam area.
The resourced center was established by Kongo Union of Disabled Society (KUDS), an association of persons with disability in the Nabdam district.
The event which took place in Kongo at the newly completed resource center brought so much joy to the association. Chairman of the group Dr. Thomas Moore expressed gratitude to God for making their dream of completing the project come true. According to him, the whole initiative started after the persons with disability acknowledged him as their leader and he had no choice but to accept the responsibility and work for the betterment of the association. However, he lamented that persons with disability are still looked down upon and discriminated against.
According to the group chairman, the cost of living for a person with disability is at least twice that of the able person. He stressed that Vehicles imported in the country make no room for the disabled, offices are built without thinking that one day a disabled person would visit, only few schools can be accessed by the disabled and most people still think disabled people are evil and full of bad luck which he described as unfortunate. He also stated that disabled persons education should be free of charge up to University level.
The construction of the resource center according to Dr. Moore was supported by Non-Governmental Organizations, Foreign Donor Partners and some government officials including the Member of Parliament Hon. Boniface Gambila.
