Workshop for Journalists on Ghana’s Shea Sector Underway in Tamale

A two day capacity building workshop for journalists is underway in Tamale to sensitize and build the capacity of media practitioners on the shea sector in Ghana and how the media can help disseminate information on the economic importance of the shea nut industry in Ghana.

The workshop which is being organized by Shea Network Ghana (SNG) and funded by BUSAC is expected to among others create the awareness of the Ghanaian media on the potential of the Ghana shea sector and the role of the entire value chain and also empower practicing journalists with the potential and technical skills to investigate and report on shea issues especially on key advocacy skills.

According SNG, The shea industry has been identified as a major contributor to the Ghanaian economy compared to other non-traditional cash crops. The SNV Netherlands Development Organization, in 2010 and 2012 reported that approximately the sector engages and provides incomes for some 900,000 Ghanaian rural women shea nut collectors, 7,000 women butter processors, and 100 shea traders.

It added that the sector is also challenged by poor Government of Ghana policy for the development of the sector.

Facilitators at the program will be speaking on Ghana’s economy and the shea sector, SADA Region and shea and challenges at tricking down of shea gains.
