The Member of Parliament for Binduri in the Upper East Region, Abdulai Abanga explained that the Majority group in Parliament could not have supported the Minority group’s censure motion against the Minister for Finance because of some of the concerns raised by the Minority group bordered on criminality.

It would be recalled that the Minority in Parliament, Thursday, November 10, 2022, moved a motion that sought to censure Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs accused the Finance Minister of acting outside the powers of the office and largely blamed him for the country’s current economic woes.

This motion, if passed, would have compelled President Akufo-Addo to fire his treasury chief.

Before the Minority’s move in Parliament, a statement signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong said neither the party nor its parliamentary side will lend what they said was a mischievous move by a side they said lacked credibility in the matter.

“By this directive, the leadership of the Majority Caucus especially the Whips are to ensure that no Member of the Majority Caucus partakes in this exercise by the Minority Group in Parliament,” the NPP said in a statement.

Speaking to the issue on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, Tuesday, November 15, 2022, he said the Majority”s decision not to support the Minority on the censure move was in the right direction. He reminded Ghanaians that the Finance Minister had a fantastic track record. Mr. Abdulai added that the calls from a section of Ghanaians for the Finance Minister be sacked were genuine because of the current hardship in the country.

“Some of them [issues raised by the Minority] bordering on criminality and you could see that some of these were hearsay. They did not have evidence so how were we going to be able to support them to say that Ken Ofori Atta, who is the Finance Minister, is involved in corruption that we haven’t seen the evidence. How were we going to support that?” he asked.

If the person was an NDC person, Mr. Abdulai insisted that the Majority group’s position on the matter would have been the same.

The Binduri MP suggested that Ghanaians should allow the adhoc committee to finish its work and then Parliament can decide on which turn the matter takes.
