The MCE for Kassena Nankana, Joseph Adongo is unhappy that the construction and resettlement of traders to the Navrongo new market has been delayed. Mr. Adongo admitted that the Assembly’s construction work schedule had failed to meet the initial agreements reached with the traders. He however explained that the situation arose out of circumstances that could not be controlled by the Assembly.

Mr. Adongo said this when he spoke in a recent interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

“We formed a committee, they [traders] came to the Assembly and we went to the place. We went to do a survey and came back. We said if they are able to pay about Ghc1,300 somebody would be able to have a plot and we would be able to do the graveling. The team really underestimated what work we need to do because the place is a valley and [contains] a lot of water. We needed a lot of gravel. So we started and we have done the graveling.”

“Let me use this opportunity to apologise to the market women. We told them we were going to do it within a particular period of time but there were a lot of issues that came up coupled with the rainy season. We said that if you are able to pay the money within this time, we would start the work and we would finish it but the money delayed for some time but we cannot blame them [traders] because we know the system,” he said.

The MCE explained work at the site is now far advanced.

” … but now graveling is done. We have done the demarcation. We have done the design of the market. We are going to do the allocation, probably next week because we need to meet the women before. All the paperwork is done. All the contract forms are done. We have also met with GRIDCo to see how we can position the lights to make it a modern market,” he said.
