District Police Commander for Bongo in the Upper East region, ASP Paul Archibald Ankan has on behalf of the police command apologized to the family of late Nashiru Nsoh who was shot and killed by a police officer on duty some weeks ago.

It will be recalled that on January 2, 2016, a police officer on duty at the Namoo border in the Bongo district on suspicion of armed robbers chased Nashiru Nsoh and a pillion rider and shot him in the ribs.

According to ASP Ankan, the incident was unfortunate and that it was not the intention of the police officer to shoot and kill the 24 year old man. He narrated that the incident happened when the officer as part of his duties gave a warning shot to scare the young man in order to apprehend him but unfortunately the bullet hit the late Nashiru.

Speaking at a dialogue meeting in Bongo, ASP Ankan used the opportunity to apologize to the family of the deceased but added that the police service will at the right time formerly apologize to the family.

“It was an unfortunate incident on our part so I just pass through the media to apologize to the family and at the right time we shall get to the family and sympathize with them,” he said.

The upper east region has been inundated with acts of motor bike snatching with some individuals losing their lives in the process of resisting the robbery acts.  ASP Ankan stated that the Bongo police command in collaboration with some youth in the district has intensified patrols leading to the gunning down of a notorious motor bike snatcher in the area.

ASP Ankan added that the police patrol team has adopted measures to patrol the district with motor bikes since the robbers after robbing victims escape through the numerous unapproved routes in the district. He added that sensitization exercises have begun for students in second cycle institutions in the district against negative vices since they are vulnerable to those practices.

Speaking on terrorism, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration in charge of Namoo border, Asare Sarpong Bediako expressed worry that the district has many unapproved roads and hence making it difficult to track down suspected terrorists. DSI Sarpong emphasized the need for the assembly to always partner with security apparatus in putting up roads in the district.

Paramount Chief of Bongo traditional area, Naba Baba Salifu Lemyaarum gave a week ultimatum to all sub chiefs in the district to facilitate the formation of community watch dog committees to assist the security agencies to carry out their mandate.
