Dishonest revenue collectors plague Bawku West District Assembly

The DCE for the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region, Tahiru Issahaku Ahmed is worried about revenue collectors within his jurisdiction. Mr. Ahmed suggested that many of the collectors have not reported honestly, the actual sums of monies collected on behalf of the Assembly.

This came to light in a recent interview with Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

According to the DCE for Bawku West, plans are afoot to sanitise the revenue collection schemes in the District.

“In the Bawku West District it [revenue collection avenues], is not too bad. I must confess, it is not too bad when it comes to local revenues. The only thing is the approach to collecting the money. We have the Zebila market, Adatusi market, Sapeliga market, Binaba market and those kinds of markets. Yes, they are not too big markets but they are economically viable. [The problems] are the methods; how the collections are made.”

“You know, if you have to change something, you have to study the old system very well. Once you become dissatisfied with the old system, you would now have motivation to start your new system. The new system should be dealing with the challenges in the old system that you are not satisfied with. Indeed, I have been putting my eye on our local revenue. We have good sources of local revenue but the money doesn’t come in. If we have resource points, and it [the money] is not coming in, then it means there is a problem somewhere,” he said.

The DCE for the Bawku West area insisted that given the opportunity to lead, MDCEs have no excuse not to work.

“As DCEs, I want to say that there is no point in complaining. It is about taking action. If you take an action and people are not comfortable with the action, then that is how it is. I am not here to make excuses. I am here to implement proactive actions.”
