Greed is why some Assemblies in Upper East Region don’t have Presiding Members – Dean of PMs

John Apaabey, the Presiding Member for the Builsa South District Assembly and Dean of Presiding Members in the Upper East Region, is worried about the level of greed at the local assembly level.

In his opinion, greed remains one of the reasons assemblies struggle to elect Presiding Members. In the Upper East Region, three assemblies are still yet to elect PMs. They are; Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Bongo District Assembly, and Chiana-Paga District Assembly.

Mr. Apaabey said this when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

“Greed, on the part of the politicians and even ourselves [as assembly members]. It is greed and then our inability to even understand the concept even before coming in [as assembly members],” he said.

Mr. Apaabey continued to say that some assembly members vie for the positions to satisfy their individual needs and not necessarily to help the development of their local areas.

“A lot of us don’t come in because we have the interest to come and do the voluntary service,” he said.

According to the Dean of PMs in the Upper East Region, it is unfortunate that some assembly members have become extensions of the MPs in the assembly and are only there to further the agenda of the MP of the various MMDCEs; a situation that goes against development.

“Now, a lot of us as assembly members  become assembly members on the whims of political sponsorship. Once you come on board like that, you may not have the same say. SO for who becomes Presiding Member, the MP says, no, I am not comfortable with this gentleman. The DCE also says, no, I am not comfortable with this guy. He’s a known NDC guy so if you give it to him, he’ll become an obstacle, and so on and so forth,” he said.

For Mr. Apaabey, the activities that happen within the local government substructure are getting worse by the day.
